
The Silver Mine in Schwaz whisks you away on an exciting journey through time on the trail of the miners of old. During a tour lasting about 90 minutes - after an exciting ride on the mine train (not for people with claustrophobia!) - you will learn everything there is to know about this, the biggest mine of the 15th century, as well as about the famous Fugger merchant family. Afterwards, we recommend visiting Schloss Freundsberg, the emblem of the Lower Inntal Valley. This is also the site of the Schwaz Mining & Heritage Museum.
Hainzenberg Gold Mine in Zell am Ziller is only about a 25-minute drive away. Ride the "Gold Express", past the Miners' Chapel to the mine entrance, where your guided tour will begin (bring sturdy shoes and warm clothing!).
Also an easy tour for smaller children.
Krimml Waterfalls are about a 1-hour drive away via the Gerlos Road (toll road!). Along the way, you will be able to enjoy countless beautiful views of the falls.
Please note: Use the parking area for the "Wasserwelt" theme park!
Krimml Waterfalls are pram-accessible, though some stretches are quite steep.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds is located in Wattens. This unique interactive exhibiition consists of fantastic subterranean Chambers of Wonder, all related to the theme of crystal - many rooms having been added by André Heller in 2003.
A botanical giant spweing water guards the entrance to the building and welcomes his guests. From his head we are afforded broad panoramic views. At the conclusion of the tour, visitors have an opportunity to purchase all kinds of crystal objects in a wide range of prices.
The creatively designed outdoor grounds are a delightful place to unwind - including a maze, alpine garden, various art objects and playgrounds for the enjoyment of smaller visitors.
Lake Achensee is within quick, convenient reach - take a 35-minute car drive or, if you prefer, ride the Zillertalbahn railway. Once in Jenbach, you will set out on a 45-minute ride on a steam-powered cog railway taking you to the southern tip of the Achensee. Once there, you can enjoy any one of a number of extended hikes, or you may prefer to take a cruise of the lake itself. Please note: ask at the railway station about combo tickets for the train and ship!
The Rofangebirge mountains stand at the southern edge of the Achensee, affording wonderful views of the lake and the surrounding alpine scenery. Located in Maurach is the valley terminal of the Rofan cable car, which will quickly carry you up to an elevation of 1840 m above sea level. In nice weather, especially when the thermals are good, you will be able to observe many hang- and paragliders taking off.
Alpenzoo Innsbruck is around a 45-minute drive from here and home exclusively to animals native to the Alps. There is also a show farm, where you can get to know domesticated animals from the alpine region. For smaller animal fans, there is an adventure playground with a "Bare Cave". From the Alpenzoo, visitors have the option to ride the Hungerburgbahn funicular down into the valley and Innsbruck (home to a gigantic panoramic painting), or further up the mountain where they can soak in the magnificent views out across Innsbruck.
The Tyrolean Open-Air Farm Museum in Kramsach (ca. 35-minute drive) has on display typical farmhouses from various valleys throughout Tyrol, providing fascinating insights into the traditional work and lifestyle of our farmers. Visitors can also explore other rural buildings including a sawmill, grain mill, smithy, chapel and a school.
Kundler Gorge is about a 35-minute drive from here. A wonderful place to hike, both for families and seniors. If you wish, you could also include a relaxing train ride to Wildschönau. The walk from the gorge entrance to the train station takes about one hour. In the stream bed, amateur geologists will discover a wide variety of different rocks.
Schleier Waterfall near Hart (neighboring village of Uderns) can be reached via a self-guided ornithology trail, where you will be able to learn all kinds of fascinating information about local bird life. Located at the beginning of this path, at Restaurant "Almdiele", is Zillertal Bird World, a new attraction that opened just recently. It features aviaries and a free-flight area, home to a wide variety of native birds. In an exhibition hall, you will also be able to browse a rich selection of precious gems and minerals from our alpine world and, if you wish, purchase some of them to share with friends and family back home.
The Spieljoch is a mountain in the Zillertal that is very popular with families. Leaving from Fügen, the Spieljochbahn carries you up in comfortable 4-person gondolas to an elevation of 2,000 m. Once at the mountain terminal, you can set out on countless hikes ranging in length and difficulty, while there is also a historic mine close by that is open to visitors. From the summit cross (15-minute walk from the mountain terminal), you can enjoy magical views of the Karwendelgebirge and Wilder Kaiser mountains.
Schloss Tratzberg near Jenbach was built high above the Inntal Valley back in the year 1500. From the car park, it can be reached either via a footpath (15-minute walk) or with a tourist train. Tours utilize audio-visual equipment (offered in seven different languages), while littler visitors are given their own special tour (at the same time) in fairytale form.
The Interactive Dairy in Mayrhofen invites families and groups to visit 11 different stations where they will learn how milk is turned into cheese and butter. It's live, interactive, multi-media and totally fascinating. Visitors also learn interesting information about life in the region, as well as the various products and their traditional ingredients. Culinary treats for the taste buds add the perfect finishing touches to this tour, with a chance to sample and purchase a wide selection of farm-fresh products.
Wolfsklamm Gorge in Stans leads visitors via occasionally steep trails and stairways, up between rock canyons and thunderous waterfalls. It is suitable for all age groups, but completely unsuitable for prams.
